CREATIVE PROCESS

I use fine art acrylic impasto paints and palette knives to create my unique style of art. Each stroke of paint is very deliberate and exclusive from any other and is symbolic of the individuality found in each detailed aspect of the Australian countryside. I often blend my real-life experiences with my photographic experiences, producing a tranquil piece of art. A realistic scene, reconstructed by the way an experience made me feel in an emotional sense and by what I creatively experienced at that moment. I feel a strong connection to the land and my aim is to share the beauty I see in an intriguing and emotional way. I find that when I look at the countryside and feel inspired by an abstract shape, texture or pattern, my mind will immediately translate the scene into a palette knife painting, and I begin to obsess over how to make that scene come to life.

A continuous motif across all my paintings is found in the excessive layering of colours, shapes and textures. I begin my creative process by layering darker colours on the canvas to form the shapes and textures that will lead to the intent of the painting. This is the dominant theme across all my paintings as a single shape, or combination of shapes that I witness in reality, become what is most accurately documented about my real-life experiences. I use each layer of paint to create an underlying texture that directs the creative process. It creates an incredibly soft and subtle vector that allows my viewer to circulate the entire piece of art in a strategic pattern, drawing their eyes to the significant features of my painting. The layers of textures and colours expose an intriguing depth in my art. With each layer I build, the colours gradually lighten. I highlight areas to complement distinct features of the painting and allow the darker base colours to seep through. This technique also allows me to accurately portray the delicate harshness of the Australian landscape. The way I utilise colours in my paintings is very expressive. Often the colours I use are on the same spectrum as the realistic scene I’m visualising, but I like to twist the colours to suggest a surreal depiction. The combination of these skills leaves me with a piece of art that allows you as the viewer, to lose yourself in my thoughts, and explore your own sense of connection to the land.

Without intention, I have invested a short lifetime’s worth of time and energy into studying artistic skills, learning techniques and practising art. I am very proud of my progress, and I am very excited to share this chapter of my creative journey with you.
