Description
Ablaze is fiery, gritty, and full of movement. It captures the raw power of the red heart of Australia. Viewed from above, the work transports you to a sun-scorched landscape, where a mob of cattle casts long shadows across the earth. The subject here isn’t the cattle themselves, but their shadows — dark, directional, and strong — painted with deliberate clarity and depth to draw the eye into the quiet motion of the scene.
This piece is all about texture. Layers of sand and acrylic have been built up to create a uniform grit that mimics the parched red dirt of the outback. At first glance, the surface is all heat and dust — but look closer, and hints of orange, yellow, and even blue begin to reveal themselves, buried in the layers like light caught in soil. The more you look, the more you find.
Inspired by aerial imagery and the perfect angles of shadow captured at just the right time of day, Ablaze is less a replication and more a response — a feeling rendered in texture and colour. The black shadows of the herd stretch across the canvas with purpose, their raised forms sculpted in impasto acrylic to lift them from the surface. It’s a subtle 3D effect that makes the scene come alive — suggesting both presence and passage, like a memory etched into the land.
There’s no single story being told here — it’s about movement, heat, stillness, and grit. About the strength of cattle moving across a blazing landscape, and the harmony of softness and severity that defines life on the land. There’s power in this work — but it’s a quiet, grounded kind. The type that builds over time, layer by layer, like the artwork itself.
Ablaze is a mid-sized piece that suits a range of spaces. It brings strength without dominating — a bold centre of warmth and energy that speaks to those who feel connected to the red earth. Whether viewed from across the room or up close, it rewards attention — inviting you to pause, notice, and feel.

All of my original art and art reprints are signed with an ‘S’ logo. This logo was the Storey family brand used by my Great-Grandfather, on what is now my Grandparent's cattle farm. The farm has been in the Storey name since the mid-19th century however the brand was only in use from roughly the 1930s to the 1960s on sheep. After shearing, the brand was dipped in dye and pressed to the sheep’s hind quarter. It would stain the wool for quite some time and be used to identify the sheep if they strayed.
I have immense pride in my origin, and I love that I am able to attach a piece of family history to the art that I create. I strongly believe that when purchasing art, it is incredibly important to feel a strong sense of passion from the artist through the painting. I hope that combining my lineage with my art expresses this connection.
