Description
Bold, grounding, and deeply reflective — Fractured Currents is a statement piece that captures not just a scene, but a sensation. It speaks to the quiet strength found in nature, and the way fragility and resilience often exist side by side. From above, the jagged forms of cracked earth meet the layered vegetation and movement of flock in motion — creating a tension that feels both fractured and fluid, much like the currents of life itself.
This artwork wasn't painted from a landscape — it was painted from feeling. Created at a pivotal moment in my practice, Fractured Currents marked a turning point where I pushed beyond comfort, stretched the boundaries of realism, and trusted the process completely. The composition unfolded with a clarity that felt instinctual — the painting painted itself.
There are visual cues of the natural world throughout — cracked earth, layered vegetation, and formations that resemble sheep from above — but the painting’s depth lies in the feeling it carries. Layered into the work is the emotional landscape: strength, peace, change. It’s a harmony of grit and softness — a reflection of the landscape, and perhaps of ourselves.
The texture tells its own story. I used palette knives, sand, watered-down acrylics, and a splatter tool to create depth and energy. Crackle medium adds striking impact — applied thickly and left to dry slowly, forming natural fractures across the earth-toned surface. The vegetation, built over many layers, combines grit and softness, abstract and suggestion, realism and emotion.
This piece is a true centrepiece. It’s both calm and commanding. Whether displayed in a home or a commercial space, it offers a grounded yet powerful presence — perfect for those drawn to earthy textures and the quiet strength of the Australian landscape.
Fractured Currents brings with it a sense of peace, strength, and connection — an invitation to slow down and settle into the natural rhythm of the land.

All of my original art and art reprints are signed with an ‘S’ logo. This logo was the Storey family brand used by my Great-Grandfather, on what is now my Grandparent's cattle farm. The farm has been in the Storey name since the mid-19th century however the brand was only in use from roughly the 1930s to the 1960s on sheep. After shearing, the brand was dipped in dye and pressed to the sheep’s hind quarter. It would stain the wool for quite some time and be used to identify the sheep if they strayed.
I have immense pride in my origin, and I love that I am able to attach a piece of family history to the art that I create. I strongly believe that when purchasing art, it is incredibly important to feel a strong sense of passion from the artist through the painting. I hope that combining my lineage with my art expresses this connection.
